Into the Loud

If you ever wondered what’s up in Dayton, Ohio, Nick Kizirnis may be able to offer some clues with his first solo release Into the Loud. A veteran of numerous other Dayton area bands (Cage, Eyesinweasel, Mulchmen, Nicky Kay and His Fabulous Kay Tones), this is more than anything a very fun and rockin’ disc of fifteen songs that range from post-punk new wave rock to singer-songwriter to modern alternative, informed by surf rock, rockabilly, and even British invasion … (read more)

Ohio Silver

May 23rd, 2009 Comments off

Honky Tonk? Western Swing? Rockabilly? Jazz? Ohio Silver blends all these elements and more into a style roots music enthusiasts are already dubbing “ULTRA-BILLY”. Combining a wide variety of roots influenced, yet keeping their gaze firmly focused on the 21st century, Ohio Silver both relives the good times and creates a few of their own.

Launched as a take-off from The Mulchmen, Dayton’s only KAPOWEE instrumental surf trio, Mulchmen guitarist Nick Kizirnis formed Ohio Silver with Michael Kotur, Dan O’Connor and Brian Hoeflich to explore more of the traditional elements of American roots music that The Mulchmen had tapped into.

Co-bandleader Michael Kotur, who has already logged much time on the roots circuit with his last group, Rattlebox, guides the group into some uncharted realms, leaping boundaries and avoiding the pitfalls of limiting Ohio Silver’s musical scope.

Bassist Dan O’Connor is well-known as a member of OO OO WA, and especially Mink, one of Dayton’s best pop bands.

Drummer Brian Hoeflich has played with VELOUR, THE SPOO MONKEYS, and was deputy drummer for THE MULCHMEN for the past year.

When asked to describe “that tune you just played”, the members of Ohio Silver could only shrug their shoulders and say “that was a jazz standard done with a honky tonk feel as if played by a post-modern alternative roots revival band.” What? Try ULTRA-BILLY.
